Trusted climate action

Copa airlines is enabling travelers to better understand and to help address their carbon emissions. When you fly with Copa, you can then support certified carbon projects that reduce or remove CO2 emissions in an amount equivalent to the carbon footprint of your trip.

The climate projects we support

How it works

Estimate your carbon emissions

Based on your travel information, we will estimate your individual carbon footprint based on the type of aircraft you are traveling with. Our CO2 emissions calculations are based on .

Understand your carbon footprint and take climate action

Once you understand the carbon emissions associated with your flight, the option to help address these emissions will be presented during the process of purchasing your ticket. If selected, you will receive an email receipt with a downloadable certificate confirming your support of carbon projects.

Support trusted carbon projects

You help address your carbon emissions by supporting a selection of high-impact carbon project. Our project portfolio is verified by the most stringent international standards, and each project either reduces or removes global CO2 emissions.

Individual impact, collective change: the importance of understanding and caring about your carbon footprint

As individuals, our day-to-day lives and activities generate carbon emissions. This resulting, individual carbon footprint contributes to the overall amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is a leading cause of climate change. By being mindful of our carbon footprint and making conscious efforts to reduce it, we can help mitigate the effects of climate change and create a more sustainable future for ourselves and future generations. Furthermore, reducing our carbon footprint can also lead to personal benefits, such as cost savings, improved air quality, and increased health and well-being.

What is a carbon footprint?

Your carbon footprint, or a company’s carbon footprint, is an estimation of all of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from daily activities or operations, such as a flight. The CO2 emissions of a flight mainly depend on the aircraft used, the distance flown, and the number of passengers and cargo the aircraft carries.

How do you estimate my carbon emissions?

Our CO2 emissions calculations are based on  and take into account parameters such as all scheduled flights, aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, and historical load factors for more than 400 airlines. The precision of the calculation will depend on the input data.

What is carbon offsetting and how does it work?

Carbon offsetting enables individuals and organizations to take climate action by voluntarily supporting certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Certified carbon projects issue carbon credits. Each carbon credit represents a single unit of GHG emissions (being one (1) tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e)) that is reduced or removed from the atmosphere. A unit of GHG emissions can be reduced or removed through various methods or project types (e.g. forestry projects, landfill methane recovery and destruction). When an individual purchases a carbon credit from these projects, they contribute to these projects that advance climate action around the world.

Will addressing my carbon emissions really create a positive impact?

Yes. When you offset the carbon footprint of your flight, you support climate solutions like renewable energy projects, community projects, or nature-based solutions that reduce or remove carbon emissions. A project that is certified to a credible carbon certification body and that issues carbon offsets must adhere to the principle of “additionality.” When a project demonstrates “additionality”, it means that the climate impact of that project is above and beyond any emission reductions or removals that would have happened without that project. In other words, you are not supporting a climate impact that would have taken place without the offsetting project. This offsetting option provided by Copa Airlines does not replace or minimize the airline's broader climate commitments and responsibility. It is a voluntary engagement option for passengers who wish to offset the emissions associated with their journeys and to help support climate action as individuals. The payment you make by offsetting your travel will be used to support projects that reduce or remove emissions to an equivalent amount of your travel, and Copa Airlines does not have any financial gain in this context.
